2020-2021 Virginia Phi Beta Lambda Update

In March we made the difficult decision to cancel the 2020 Virginia PBL State Leadership Conference due to the COVID pandemic. The national office switched from the annual National Leadership Conference to an online National Leadership Experience, allowing states with earlier state conferences to participate in limited online versions of competitive events.

As we move forward in the 2020-2021 school year, the safety of our students and advisers is our highest priority. We realize that education in colleges and universities will look very different this fall. While it is difficult to plan during a pandemic, Virginia Phi Beta Lambda is undergoing a transformation to provide more valuable and realistic leadership experiences to college students. We may reach out to you for responses and feedback via surveys, focus groups, and other ongoing discussions throughout this year to better serve members and advisers.

Leadership Team Updates

We are excited to announce our Virginia PBL State President is Magin Sanchez from the University of Virginia. We will be forming a President's Council to support the PBL transformation, so please stay tuned for more information on applying to join the council.

Virginia PBL also has a new member of the leadership team: Mr. Nicholas Western will be serving as our State Officer Liaison. Mr. Western is currently working for Fairfax County Public Schools and brings experience as a former state and national officer. As State Officer Liaison he will be guiding the State President and the President's Council in implementing their goals and plans.

Meet the New Leadership Team Additions

State President

Magin Sanchez is a rising junior at the University of Virginia, majoring in Government and minoring in Social Entrepreneurship. Magin first joined FBLA-PBL 7 years ago at the recommendation of his FBLA Advisor at Potomac Senior High School. Residing in Woodbridge, Virginia, Magin has served in leadership roles at the local and regional level. As the son of Salvadorian immigrants, Magin has seen first-hand the empowering nature of FBLA-PBL.

"Despite the challenges awaiting us this year, there is an incredible opportunity to lay the foundation for Virginia Phi Beta Lambda for years to come. It will take your help to do so, and I look forward to working with our local chapter officers and members as we get this done.

If you have any questions or ideas, please reach out to me on Instagram and Twitter at the username @MaginPBL. Let's have an incredible year!”

State Officer Liaison

Nick Western is excited to work with you and the PBL state officer team as the new Virginia PBL State Officer Liaison. As a former PBL state president and national officer, he has seen firsthand the impact that our organization can provide and is working with the PBL state officer team to ensure that our members have an incredible PBL experience. Since last year, he has worked as a Business and Information Technology Teacher and FBLA Adviser for Fairfax County Public Schools. In this role, he teaches courses ranging from cybersecurity to personal finance. In his spare time, he enjoys traveling, drinking coffee, and meeting dogs at the park.
